Motherhood is one of the most transformative events for human beings. On a biological level, a psychological level, a social level, and a personal level. However, biomedicine has traditionally focused solely on describing fetal development, somewhat neglecting all the changes that a woman’s entire body undergoes during this process. In a small attempt to fill this knowledge gap, our research group has studied whether a woman’s brain changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period and whether these changes could have implications for her own health and well-being. Using magnetic resonance imaging, we have observed very prominent changes in the volume of cortical gray matter, indicating that the transition to motherhood is one of the moments of greatest brain plasticity in adulthood—in other words, one of the greatest capacity to learn and adapt to new situations.
